Mills Godwin is the only Virginia Governor elected twice to office; his second administration funded the community college system and named him ‘The Education Governor.’

The Godwin Bust was originally commissioned in plaster by the 1992-3-4 classes of Godwin High School, Henrico county. Upon learning about the DiPasquale commission done from life of the Governor, The Virginia Historical Society offered to pay for a bronze edition to go to the school and for the plaster original to join their permanent display. Further interest was shown by the Virginia Wesleyan College in Newport News, Virginia which commissioned a bust of Mrs. Katherine Godwin to stand with a second commissioned edition of the Governor in their new Godwin Administration Building, installed in 1996.
